Peacemakers have negotiated successfully the purchase of a parcel of land in the district of Embu, Central Kenya, in the locality where the work first begun in 1991. It is ¾ hectare in size, surrounded by farmers and relatives of responsible members of Peacemakers Kenya, therefore bringing security in its own way. It is also in the heart of rural Kenya where the people have mostly been remote from receiving benefits to meet their many needs.

Purchase of land and future plans

Peacemakers have negotiated successfully the purchase of a parcel of land in the district of Embu, Central Kenya, in the locality where the work first begun in 1991. It is ¾ hectare in size, surrounded by farmers and relatives of responsible members of Peacemakers Kenya, therefore bringing security in its own way. It is also in the heart of rural Kenya where the people have mostly been remote from receiving benefits to meet their many needs.

Peacemakers’ vision has always been to have a Resource Centre in the area where they work

The previous owner of the land is in possession of a ‘Green Card’, which will be passed to Peacemakers in the deeds. This means that we can purpose build and accommodate projects on this site.
Peacemakers Kenya will be the new owners and a local church will be the Trustees.

Peacemakers’ vision has always been to have a Resource Centre in the area where they work. This would fulfil many needs and would function as a drop-in Rescue Centre, a Rehab Centre, a Haven for aids orphans until they are found foster homes and become part of the community again. It could also become a venue for training seminars, projects that are beneficial to the community i.e. Poshi Mill (maize grinder into flour) and setting up a Bakery etc., to give employment to locals as well.

This would be just the beginning to satisfy a whole list of needs and Peacemakers are sure other suggestions for use of the land will be proposed and considered as they begin to develop the site. Maybe this is the first of a series of Resource Centres to be developed in the future, as the work of Peacemakers spreads into other areas.

During the recent visit to Kenya, Brenda Marshall, on behalf of Peacemakers, attended a ceremony to formally receive ownership of the plot of land. An avocado sapling was planted and following a hand shake the land was transferred to Peacemakers. The more formal documentation confirming the sale will, in true Kenyan style, take some time.

STOP PRESS : A water supply has been provided to the site and banana and maize planted. Peacemaker’s plans for the site will be drawn up by our contact in Nairobi, John Edwards.
